Re: [Harp-L] Chromatic Blues - and Harmonicasessions articles

Paul deLay was one of the few who does use the slide to good effect while playing in third and tenth positions. Dennis Gruenling also uses the slide in third.

Certainly 3rd position (D on a C chromatic, A on a G, G on an F, etc.) is the most commonly used way of playing blues chromatic. Tenth position (Eb on a C, Bb on a G, etc.) runs a semi-distant second. You can play 10th position just like 3rd if you hold the button in all the time. If you put the button in play, it offers a different set of possibilities, though.

Paul Delay also played in Ab on a C chromatic (9th position - Why Can't You Love Me), sometimes in G, and at recorded least once (Oat Bran) in C (1st position ). Dennis Gruenling sometimes plays chromatic in 12th position (F on a C).

I'll be writing about using the slide in third position at HarmonicaSesions.com. The next several installments will be about playing in third position, and the last several have been about blues in other keys (B minor, B, E, and A so far).

Is chromatic blues on the chromatic limited to 3rd position tunes?

Most blues players (Paul de Lay?) never use the button, in my observation.
And didn't Little Walter or somebody pose with a chrome with the lever bent
or
busted off?

It might seem that if this is so, most of the potential of the chrome is
being wasted...

Obviously, the chrome (except Slide Harp/Koch and the Hering 10-hole richter
chromatic) lack the potential for bending the standard richter harp has -- but
there are notes available that can't be accessed any other way than
switching
harps or overblowing (sometimes not always feasible for any number of
reasons).
